White Willow Bark
Price range: $4.25 through $7.50
White Willow bark is a traditional botanical often referred to as ‘nature’s aspirin,’ commonly used to support joint health, ease back pain, and reduce mild inflammation.
Description
Botanical Name: Salix alba
About This Herb: Our White Willow bark is carefully harvested from young branches, then dried and cut to preserve its beneficial compounds. The use of willow bark for discomfort dates back to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Hippocrates himself wrote about its benefits for easing pain and reducing fever. In the 19th century, scientists isolated salicin from willow bark, which led to the development of modern aspirin—making white willow the ancient ancestor of one of the world’s most common remedies.
Traditional Uses: White Willow bark is primarily valued for its ability to support joint health, ease back pain, and reduce mild inflammation associated with conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It’s also traditionally used for headaches, fevers, and general discomfort. Unlike synthetic aspirin, white willow bark is gentler on the stomach because the body must metabolize it, resulting in a slower onset but longer-lasting effect.
How to Prepare:
-
As a tea: Simmer 1-2 teaspoons in water for 15-20 minutes. The flavor is very bitter—best blended with peppermint, ginger, honey, or cinnamon.
-
As a tincture: Take 20-40 drops up to three times daily as needed.
-
Decoction: For stronger effect, simmer longer and strain thoroughly.
Safety & Considerations: Do not give to children under 18 due to the risk of Reye’s syndrome. Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. Avoid if you have aspirin allergy, bleeding disorders, kidney disease, or stomach ulcers. May interact with blood thinners, NSAIDs, and other medications. Consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if managing a health condition.
Black Willow
While we source this high-quality Salix alba (White Willow) for our shop, we also live and work alongside its native cousin, the Black Willow (Salix nigra), which grows wild down in our hollow of our ranch. Visitors can see it growing near our high tunnel and farmstand. Our deep relationship with Virginia’s native willows is what inspired our research into natural salicylates and their incredible role in cellular health.
