About This Herb: Our Barberry root is harvested from mature plants and carefully dried to preserve its bright yellow inner bark and root, which contains the alkaloid berberine. This spiny shrub has been used in European and Middle Eastern herbalism for centuries as a potent bitter tonic and antimicrobial herb.

Traditional Uses: Barberry is primarily valued as a hepatic (liver) herb and digestive bitter. It stimulates digestion, supports liver function, and promotes bile flow. The berberine content gives it antimicrobial properties, and it’s traditionally used for gastrointestinal infections. It’s also considered an alterative for skin conditions.

How to Prepare: As a tea, simmer 1 teaspoon in water for 15-20 minutes. The intensely bitter flavor is best combined with other herbs. As a tincture, take 20-40 drops before meals. Often combined with other bitters like gentian or yellow dock.
