Description

Botanical Name: Tussilago farfara

About This Herb: Our Coltsfoot leaves are harvested in early spring, then carefully dried. The name “Tussilago” comes from the Latin “tussis,” meaning cough, and this has been the go-to herb for coughs since ancient times. The flowers appear before the leaves, leading to the common name “son before the father.”

Traditional Uses: Coltsfoot is an expectorant, demulcent, and antitussive. It helps loosen phlegm, soothe irritated respiratory tissues, and calm coughs. Traditionally used for dry, hacking coughs, bronchitis, whooping cough, and asthma. It was also smoked for respiratory relief (though we don’t recommend smoking).

How to Prepare: As a tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The mild, slightly sweet flavor is pleasant on its own or blended with mullein or mint. Often combined with other respiratory herbs for synergistic effect.

Safety & Considerations: Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. Contains trace amounts of pyrrolizidine alkaloids; use with respect and not for prolonged periods. Consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if managing a health condition.
