Description
Botanical Name: Juniperus communis
About This Herb: Our Juniper berries are harvested from wild shrubs when they’re ripe and blue, then carefully dried. These aromatic berries (actually modified cones) have been used for thousands of years—they were found in ancient Egyptian tombs and have been used in traditional medicine across Europe, Asia, and North America.
Traditional Uses: Juniper berries are primarily valued as a diuretic and urinary antiseptic, traditionally used for urinary tract health, bladder infections, and water retention. They’re also carminative, supporting digestion and relieving gas. The berries are famous as the primary flavoring agent in gin, and they’re used in many culinary applications.
How to Prepare: As a tea, crush 1 teaspoon of berries and steep in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The piney, fresh flavor is unique and pleasant. As a tincture, take 20-40 drops up to three times daily. Use in cooking with game, sauerkraut, or marinades.
Safety & Considerations: Not for use during pregnancy. Avoid with kidney disease. Not for long-term daily use (maximum 4-6 weeks). May irritate the kidneys in large amounts. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
