About This Herb: Our Shepherd’s Purse is harvested at flowering and carefully dried. This common “weed” gets its name from the heart-shaped seed pods that resemble old-fashioned leather purses. It has a long history of use as a hemostatic—a plant that stops bleeding—and was used extensively during World War I when conventional supplies ran short. Native to Europe, it has naturalized throughout North America and has been valued by herbalists for centuries.

Traditional Uses: Shepherd’s Purse is primarily valued as a hemostatic and astringent. It’s traditionally used for:

• Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia)

• Nosebleeds (epistaxis)

• Postpartum bleeding

• Minor wounds and cuts

• Urinary tract health (as a gentle diuretic)

The herb contains compounds that help constrict blood vessels and promote clotting, making it a valuable ally when bleeding needs to be addressed.
