🌿 Formula No. 1 – Tonicum Amara

From The Apothecary of the Botanical Physician
An exclusive line by The Herb Peddler, based on historical uses of medicinal herbs.
Aromatic Digestive & Circulatory Bitters “To awaken the stomach, enliven the spirit, and bring balance to the constitution.”

Tonicum Amara is a 19th-century inspired bitters formula crafted from traditional herbs known to stimulate digestion, warm the body, and gently support liver function. Hand-blended from roots, seeds, and aromatic leaves, this tea recalls the tonics and bitters once used by country doctors, apothecaries, and herbal physicians during a time when bitters were a staple in every home medicine drawer.

🌿 Ingredients:

  • Gentian Root – One of the most powerful herbal bitters. Stimulates appetite, bile flow, and digestive fire.
  • Chamomile Flowers – A gentle bitter with calming effects on the stomach and nerves. Slightly floral, yet functional.
  • Calamus Root – A warming aromatic once used by Thomsonians for cold, sluggish digestion and constitutional torpor.
  • Ginger Root – Warms the stomach, aids circulation, and reduces tension or nausea.
  • Fennel Seed – Aromatic carminative that sweetens the blend and relieves bloating.
  • Peppermint Leaf – Cooling and refreshing. Calms the digestive tract and adds a bright finish to this bitters blend.

🫖 How to Use:

Steep 1–2 tsp in 8 oz of hot water for 10–15 minutes, covered.
Sip 15–30 minutes before meals to awaken digestion or after meals to ease heaviness and gas.

Enjoy daily or as needed during seasonal sluggishness, stress, or dietary imbalance.

📜 Historic Inspiration

Bitters like Tonicum Amara were common in 1800s herbal handbooks and medical dispensatories. The use of Gentian, Calamus, Chamomile, and aromatic seeds like Fennel and Peppermint dates back centuries, but were especially prominent in American botanical and Eclectic medicine. These blends were taken regularly to “tone the stomach, strengthen the blood, and dispel melancholic humors.”

⚜️ Apothecary Note:

This blend echoes bitters once found in saddle bags and apothecary drawers of rural doctors and herbalists throughout the 1800s. Gentian, Calamus, and Chamomile formed the base of many old-world stomach tonics, crafted to revive sluggish digestion and bring balance to a constitution dulled by overwork, damp living, or melancholy.

🌼 What to Expect:

  • Flavor: Earthy, bittersweet, warming, and aromatic
  • Experience: Gentle digestive activation followed by a calming, centered feeling
  • Effect: Supports healthy appetite, digestion, and internal vitality
