Description

“Tart. Warm. Unapologetically bold.”

About:
Spicy Hibiscus Punch is not a quiet tea. It’s a vibrant, zingy, lip-puckering elixir that wakes up your taste buds and gets your blood moving. As a Traditional Naturopath and Master Herbalist, I formulated this blend for those who want something delicious and functional — a drink that supports immunity, warms digestion, and actually makes you look forward to herbal medicine.

The deep crimson color comes from hibiscus, a flower traditionally used for cooling the body (ironic, given the spicy ginger and cinnamon — but that contrast is the magic). The cane sugar balances the tartness, making this an elixir that feels like a guilty pleasure without being one.

Ingredients:

  • Hibiscus Petals (Hibiscus sabdariffa): Tart, cranberry-like flavor. Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. Traditionally used to support healthy blood pressure and cool inflammation.

  • Cane Sugar: A touch of sweetness to balance hibiscus’s natural tartness. Also acts as a gentle preservative for the dry blend.

  • Ginger (Zingiber officinale): Warming, spicy, and carminative. Supports digestion, eases nausea, and brings heat to the formula.

  • Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum): Sweet, woody, and deeply warming. Traditionally used for circulation, blood sugar balance, and adding a “hug in a cup” quality.

How to Enjoy:

As a Hot Tea: Add 1–3 teaspoons of the blend per 8 oz of hot water. Steep for 5–7 minutes, then strain. Adjust steeping time for desired strength — longer = more tart and spicy.

As a Sparkling Punch: Steep double-strength (2–3 teaspoons per 4 oz hot water), strain, then pour over ice and top with sparkling water or unflavored soda water. Garnish with an orange slice.

As a Kettle Corn Seasoning: This is a house favorite at The Herb Peddler. Pop fresh popcorn, toss with melted butter or coconut oil, then sprinkle the dry elixir blend directly over the popcorn. The cane sugar caramelizes slightly, the hibiscus adds tang, and the ginger-cinnamon bring the heat. It’s addictive.

Master Herbalist Note:
This blend is naturally caffeine-free and works beautifully hot or cold. We especially recommend it during cold and flu season — the vitamin C from hibiscus, the warming circulation from ginger and cinnamon, and the hydration from the tea all work together.

Historic Inspiration:
Hibiscus punches (agua de jamaica) have been enjoyed for centuries in Mexico and West Africa — always tart, often sweetened, sometimes spiced. Our Appalachian version adds mountain-grown ginger and cinnamon for a Virginia twist.

Apothecary Note:
The deep red color of hibiscus can stain fabrics and light-colored countertops — rinse spills quickly. If you are pregnant, nursing, taking blood pressure medication, or have low blood pressure, consult your healthcare provider before regular use (hibiscus can lower blood pressure). This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
