Black Willow Leaf

Price range: $4.25 through $7.50

Black Willow leaf is a gentle botanical relative of white willow, traditionally used to support pain relief, reduce fever, and ease inflammation. Harvested from our own farm-grown trees. To protect the life of this beautiful tree, we focus on sustainably harvesting its vibrant green leaves rather than the inner bark, ensuring the tree continues to thrive for generations. The leaves are milder to taste but also high in beneficial salicins, providing a gentle alternative for daily support.

Description

Botanical Name: Salix nigra

About This Herb: Our Black Willow leaves are hand-harvested from mature trees growing on our own farm in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, then carefully dried to preserve their beneficial compounds. While white willow bark is more famous in herbal circles, black willow leaf has its own rich history—particularly in North American traditional medicine, where it was valued by Native American and Eclectic physicians for similar pain-relieving and fever-reducing properties. Like its bark counterpart, black willow leaf contains salicin, the plant compound that inspired modern aspirin.

Traditional Uses: Black Willow leaf is traditionally used for:

  • Pain relief – Mild to moderate discomfort, including headaches, backaches, and joint pain

  • Fever reduction – Gentle support during colds and flu

  • Inflammatory conditions – Joint inflammation, rheumatism, and general soreness

  • Digestive support – Mild bitter properties that aid digestion

Because the leaves are gentler than the bark, they can be used in larger quantities and are often preferred for longer-term support.

How to Prepare:

  • As a tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried leaves in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The flavor is mildly bitter and earthy—honey or a touch of peppermint complements it well.

  • As a decoction: For a stronger brew, simmer 1-2 teaspoons in water for 15-20 minutes.

  • As a tincture: Take 30-60 drops up to three times daily as needed.

  • External compress: Make a strong tea and apply to sore joints or muscles.

A Note from the Farm: Black Willow is a gift of the land we steward. We harvest leaves by hand during the growing season, taking only what we need and leaving plenty for the tree to thrive. Every batch connects you directly to this beautiful tree on our farm.

Safety & Considerations: Generally recognized as safe when used as directed. As with white willow, avoid in children under 18 due to the theoretical risk of Reye’s syndrome. Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. Avoid if you have aspirin allergy, bleeding disorders, or stomach ulcers. May interact with blood thinners and other medications. Consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if managing a health condition.
