Plantain Leaf – Narrow Leaf

Price range: $4.25 through $7.50

Straight from the sunny fields of our Virginia ranch, this year’s harvest of Narrow Leaf Plantain is exceptionally vibrant. While its broad-leaf cousin is the ‘shield’ of the garden, these slender, lance-like leaves act as a medicinal spear—offering powerful, concentrated support for seasonal respiratory health and skin-toning remedies.

The difference between Broad Leaf Plantain and Narrow Leaf Plantain represents the Doctrine of Signatures quite elegantly. Our wildcrafted Ribwort is hand-harvested and gently dried to preserve the potent astringency. Hand-grown, hand-harvested, and ranch-fresh.

Description

Botanical Name: Plantago lanceolata

About This Herb:  Our Narrow Leaf Plantain (also known as Ribwort) is wildcrafted from the ranch during its peak summer growth. Unlike its broad-leaved cousin, this variety is characterized by its long, slender, lance-shaped leaves with prominent parallel veins. It has been a staple in European folk medicine for centuries, often preferred for its slightly more concentrated astringent properties.

Traditional Uses: Narrow Leaf Plantain is a powerhouse for respiratory and seasonal support. It acts as a gentle expectorant and a soothing demulcent, making it a favorite for herbal teas during the “sneezing season.” Topically, it is just as effective as Broadleaf for stings and scrapes, but its hi wgher tannin content makes it particularly excellent for skin-toning salves. Looking for our original Broadleaf Plantain? It’s our go-to for topical first aid.

How to Prepare:

  • As a tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The mild, green flavor is pleasant.

  • As a tincture: 2-4 ml, three times daily.

  • As a steam: Add to hot water for respiratory congestion.

  • For external use: Crush fresh leaves (or moisten dried) and apply directly to stings, bites, or minor wounds. Infuse in oil for salve making.

Safety & Considerations: Generally recognized as safe. Harvest from clean areas away from roads and chemicals if foraging yourself. Consult your healthcare provider before internal use, especially if managing a health condition.
