About This Herb: Our Chickweed is carefully harvested in early spring when the tender leaves are most abundant, then gently dried to preserve its mild, pleasant character. This humble “weed” with its tiny star-shaped flowers has been valued for centuries as both a food and medicine. The name “Stellaria” comes from the Latin for “star,” referring to the flower shape. It’s one of the first plants to appear in spring, making it a traditional spring tonic.

Traditional Uses: Chickweed is a nutritive herb rich in vitamins and minerals, traditionally used as a spring tonic to refresh and nourish the body after winter. It’s also valued for its cooling, soothing properties for skin conditions when used externally in poultices or salves. Internally, it supports respiratory and digestive health as a gentle demulcent. Many herbalists also use it for joint comfort and as a metabolism support.

How to Prepare:

• As a tea: Steep 1-2 teaspoons in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The mild, slightly sweet flavor is pleasant on its own or blended with other herbs.

• Fresh eating: Fresh chickweed can be eaten in salads or as cooked greens (our dried herb can be rehydrated).

• For external use: Make a strong tea as a wash for skin irritations, or add to baths. Can also be infused into oils for salves.

• As a nourishing infusion: Steep 1/4 cup in a quart of hot water overnight, strain, and drink throughout the day.
