Description
Botanical Name: Plantago major
About This Herb: Our Plantain leaves are harvested at their peak and gently dried, though fresh is always best for this herb! This humble plant that grows just about everywhere—lawns, roadsides, pathways—is one of the most valuable first-aid plants you can find. The Cherokee called it “white man’s footprint” because it seemed to follow European settlers.
Traditional Uses: Plantain is primarily a vulnerary and astringent. Freshly crushed leaves applied to insect stings, bites, or minor wounds draw out poison, reduce swelling, and stop bleeding. Internally, it’s used as a demulcent for respiratory and digestive irritation. The seeds are a source of psyllium-like fiber.
How to Prepare: For external use, crush fresh leaves (or moisten dried) and apply directly to stings, bites, or minor wounds. As a tea, steep 1-2 teaspoons in hot water for 10-15 minutes for internal use. Infuse in oil for salves. The mild, green flavor is pleasant.
Safety & Considerations: Generally recognized as safe. Harvest from clean areas away from roads and chemicals if foraging yourself. Consult your healthcare provider before internal use, especially if managing a health condition.
