Botanical Name: Mentha pulegium
About This Herb: Our Pennyroyal is harvested at peak flowering and carefully dried to preserve its intense minty-pungent aroma. This member of the mint family has a long history in folk medicine, but it’s also one of those herbs that demands respect. The name “pulegium” refers to its traditional use against fleas (pulex in Latin).
Traditional Uses: Pennyroyal has been traditionally used as an emmenagogue (to promote menstrual flow) and as a digestive carminative. It was also used externally as an insect repellent and for skin conditions. The strong, penetrating aroma is characteristic and memorable.
How to Prepare: FOR EXPERIENCED HERBALISTS ONLY. If using internally, in very small amounts only and with professional guidance. More commonly used externally as a strong infusion in baths or as an insect repellent.
