Description

Hops

Hops Botanical Name: Humulus lupulus

About This Herb: Our Hops are the dried strobiles (female flower cones) of the climbing vine, carefully harvested at peak maturity to preserve their aromatic lupulin glands. While best known as the backbone of beer brewing, hops have an equally long history as a medicinal herb, valued for their sedative and relaxing properties since medieval times.

Traditional Uses: Hops are primarily valued as a nervine and sedative, traditionally used to promote restful sleep, ease occasional anxiety, and calm an overactive mind. The bitter compounds also support digestion. The aromatic oils are relaxing, and hops-filled pillows were historically used to encourage sleep. They also have a long tradition in digestive bitters formulas.

How to Prepare:

  • As a tea: Steep 1 teaspoon in hot water for 10-15 minutes. The bitter, earthy flavor is best blended with more palatable herbs like peppermint or chamomile.

  • As a tincture: Take 20-40 drops before bed.

  • For sleep support: Best used consistently. Can be added to dream pillows or baths for relaxation.

Safety & Considerations: Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. May cause drowsiness; avoid driving after use. May interact with sedatives, antidepressants, and hormone-sensitive conditions. Avoid if you have depression. Consult your healthcare provider before use, especially if managing a health condition.
