Description
Botanical Name: Actaea racemosa (formerly Cimicifuga racemosa)
About This Herb: Our Black Cohosh root is harvested from mature plants in the fall, then carefully dried. This majestic plant with its tall white spires was a favorite of Native American herbalists, who used it extensively for women’s health and rheumatism. They introduced it to European settlers, and it remains one of our most important women’s herbs.
Traditional Uses: Black Cohosh is primarily valued for women’s health. It’s traditionally used for menstrual cramps, PMS, and menopausal symptoms like hot flashes and mood swings. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and was used for arthritis and rheumatism. It’s considered an antispasmodic and nervine.
How to Prepare: As a tea, simmer 1 teaspoon in water for 15-20 minutes. The flavor is bitter and earthy—best blended with mint or ginger. As a tincture, take 20-40 drops up to three times daily. Often used cyclically or for specific symptoms rather than continuously.
Safety & Considerations: Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. May interact with hormone therapies and blood pressure medications. Not for long-term daily use without professional guidance. Some sources recommend avoiding if you have liver conditions. Consult your healthcare provider.
