Licorice Root Botanical Name: Glycyrrhiza glabra

About This Herb: Our Licorice root is cut and sifted, carefully harvested from mature plants. The name “Glycyrrhiza” means “sweet root” in Greek, and it’s 50 times sweeter than sugar! This beloved herb has been found in Egyptian tombs and is one of the most frequently used herbs in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it’s known as “the great harmonizer” and is added to many formulas to balance other herbs.

Traditional Uses: Licorice is an adaptogenic herb that supports adrenal health and helps the body respond to stress. It’s also a soothing demulcent for respiratory and digestive tissues. In TCM, it’s valued for its harmonizing properties, helping to direct other herbs to their intended meridians. It’s traditionally used for coughs, sore throats, and digestive discomfort.

How to Prepare:

• As a tea: Simmer 1 teaspoon in water for 10-15 minutes. The naturally sweet flavor is delicious on its own or blended with other herbs.

• As a tincture: Take 20-40 drops up to three times daily.

• In formulas: Often combined with marshmallow root for respiratory support or with ashwagandha for adrenal health.

Safety & Considerations: Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. Avoid with high blood pressure, kidney disease, or low potassium. May interact with diuretics and blood pressure medications.
