Description

Botanical Name: Quassia amara

About This Herb: Our Quassia comes from the wood of this tropical tree, harvested and chipped for use. It’s named after a Surinamese healer, Graman Quassi, who brought it to the attention of European botanists. It’s famous for being one of the most bitter substances in the world—a little goes a very long way!

Traditional Uses: Quassia is primarily used as an intense bitter tonic for digestive support—it stimulates appetite, increases digestive secretions, and supports liver function. It’s also a traditional anthelmintic for intestinal parasites, and it makes an excellent natural insect repellent (the bitter taste deters insects).

How to Prepare: As a tea, use only 1/4-1/2 teaspoon per cup, simmer 10-15 minutes. The bitterness is extraordinary—most people blend it with other herbs or use as a tincture (5-15 drops before meals). For insect repellent, make a strong tea and spray on skin or plants.

Safety & Considerations: Generally recognized as safe. Not for use during pregnancy or nursing. May interact with medications. Not for long-term daily use. Start with very small amounts to assess tolerance. Consult your healthcare provider before use.
